Ne-Yo Makes Music Video For Disney's 1st African-American Princess

Posted Tue 3 Nov 2009 3:10PM NZDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training

Ne-Yo is used to writing songs for princesses, at least those in the world of popular music. He has penned hits for Beyonce, Rihanna, Celine, and Whitney. But now he adds to his repertoire, a credit for an animated princess.

Ne-Yo's new song "Never Knew I Needed" is the lead single from the soundtrack for the Walt Disney Pictures film "The Princess And The Frog" which opens in theatres on December 11.

Walt Disney Pictures has produced two versions of the music video. The regular edit which does not include footage from the movie was released Monday. A 60-second, alternate cut spliced with clips from the film will premiere on the Disney network Saturday.

"The Princess And The Frog" tells the story of Tianna, Disney's first African-American princess. Tianna lives in New Orleans in the 1920s, and is a waitress who aspires to follow in her father's footsteps and eventually own a restaurant. Tianna kisses a frog and turns into a toad, and begins her quest to find a cure.

Tianna's voice is provided by Anika Noni Rose, the Tony Award winning actress who co-starred in "Dreamgirls" alongside Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson.

In addition to Ne-Yo's "Never Knew I Needed," the soundtrack also includes songs from Anika Noni Rose and other cast members Keith David and Jenifer Lewis among others. The soundtrack will be released on November 23.

Beautiful song. Excited to see this movie which finally depicts a black young lady as a princess. Disney is starting to get it right by this inclusion, ending the exclusivity. This shows that all girls can be a princess. Love, love, love the song Neo wrote.

Really good song, makes you wonder what you should be looking for.

I can't WAIT to see this movie. I'm a little upset that she had to be the FROG princess of all things, but I'm still grateful that there's finally a black princess! I will forever love Pocahontas and Jasmine though :)

I know they have a very first african-american disney princess which is good because it's diverse, but when are the racist people going to make a Hispanic disney princess. Not one from Spain, because that may be considered Hispanic, but that's because they're from Europe which makes it okay because Europeans are considered white. It took them YEARS to release somethine out with the Hispanic culture and the show on Disney (Wizards of Waverly Place) doesn't expand the knowledge of the viewers of the Hispanic culture and the characters aren't FULLY Hispanic, they're half! And the Princess Protection Program, too. I mean, not ALL Hispanics are from Spain and sometimes people from Spain are considered white because of the young viewer's mind and they of course do that on purpose. The knowledge of the viewer is not expanded or more knowledgeable as for a twenty-thirty or even above year-old who wrote the screenplay.
