Fat Freddy's Tops

Lightning strikes twice and Wellington sons Fat Freddy's Drop make it two in a row with "Dr Boondigga And The Big BW" taking top honours on this week's Official NZ Music Chart.

The seven piece, seven NZ Music Award-winning outfit restrict US rapper Eminem's "Relapse" comeback to a sole week in the pole position.

It falls to runners-up slot; Fat Freddy's sophomore studio album continues the strong sales pattern of the past month set by Ronan Keating, Green Day and Eminem.

It's exactly four years, two weeks and five days since "Based On A True Story" began the Freddy Fairytale.

That set provided Chris Faiumu (Fitchie aka Mu), Dallas Tamaira (Joe Dukie), Warryn Maxwell (Fulla Flash), Toby Laing (Tony Chang), Joe Lindsay (Ho Pepa), Tehimana Kerr (Jetlag Johnson) and Iain Gordon (Dobie Blaze) with a Gold set and number one out of the box.

Repeating the instant number number one feat "Dr B" also ships Platinum first week. Local music website Ampflier have named the new album their biggest release ever both physically and digitally.

Whereas "Based On A True Story" arrived on the back of touring and minimal exposure prior to release, "Dr Boondigga And The Big BW"has already spawned two hit singles. "The Camel" made number 14 in July last year and "Pull The Catch" peaked at number 17 this past November. The set has big shoes to follow - 110 weeks with three separate chart-topping runs totaling 10 in all for "Story".

There's a Father and son connection with the Drop as well. Artist Otis Frizzell is responsible for Dr B's artwork, while his dad - veteran illustrator Dick Frizzell - refashioned his '50s Kiwi icon the Four Square Man for "The Great New Zealand Songbook" - the nation's best-selling compilation for a fourth frame. And it includes FFD's number six hit "Wandering Eye" lifted from "Based On A True Story".

The final chart of NZ Music Month 2009 also provides the chart debuts for two local acts - Kids of 88 and Antiform.

Thanks to C4 Auckland duo and best friends Sam and Jordan land the hottest new single of the week at number four. "My House" is C4's current theme tune and the first hit for both Kids Of 88 and their label Dryden Street.

Peoples Choice finalists at last year's NZ Music Awards Antiform - who hail from the City of Sails - are brothers Josh and Luke Purcell, Brandon Spain, MC Twincam and Sam Kingston.

The breakbeat and drum and bassists land at a very credible number 17 first time out into the Albums 40. Antiform has an album launch party Friday week in Auckland.

There are four other new singles into the chart this week. At number 29 "Blame It" is hit number two in 2009 for Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. It's his fifth appearance here, all of which are collabs as lead or support act. (Jamie Foxx is more memorable than his birthname Eric Bishop.)

Both hail from his "Intuition" album. Foxx's collaborator T-Pain can now claim 18 hits in total, although just eight have Faheem as lead act. Remarkably all have been in a tad over three years making a rather impressive six per year average.

Just like Jamie Foxx, Savage makes a fifth sojourn overall and second 2009 entry. Teaming with Rock City, "Hot Like Fire" lifted from Savage's solo sophomore number nine "Savage Island" lands at number 36. All four previous hits have been Top 10ers including two chart-toppers.

American Idol 2009 runner-up, 27-year old actor/singer Adam Lambert, may be in talks to join Queen after they split with Paul Rodgers. However in the meantime he becomes the latest Idol to chart here. His "No Boundaries", new at number 38, sees him outpace winner Kris Allen in the chart stakes here.

And rounding out the debuts is this week's UK number one "Bonkers". It gives London rapper Dizzee Rascal his first ink here and returns DJ/Producer Armand Van Helden back to the chart for the first time in 10 years.

"Bonkers" is the track that does the business for the former NZ visitor Dylan Mills. It adds a third hit and first support role for Van Helden. (Both his headline placings came in 1999.)

Albums wise there're three other newies besides the two locals.

2009 is proving to be a comeback year of sorts. Self-stylized shock rocker Marilyn Manson (real name Brian Warner) is now 40 and back in the NZ Albums Top 10 for the first time in four-and-a-half years when tge compilation album "Lest We Forget: The Best Of Marilyn Manson" made number nine.

This week out of the box he goes one better at number eight with "The High End Of Low", the rocker's eighth in all.

54-year-old Texas-raised Steve Earle returns to the Albums list for the first time in 13 years with his number 35 debuting tribute to Townes Van Zandt, titled simply "Townes". (Lucinda Williams has recorded a non-charting tribute as well).

Last time out 1996's "I Feel Alright" made number 29. His chart career here is now only six months short of 21 years. Steve's most well known set "Copperhead Road" opened his account in December 1988.

"Abnormally Attracted To Sin" is the sixth time into the NZ Albums 40 for Myra Ellen Amos. This showing, her first in 5 years, arrives at number 39 three months shy of Tori's 1992 number 18 debut "Little Earthquakes".

Best among her tally is the number 15 peak she's repeated twice, for 1994's "Under The Pink" and 1996's "Boys For Pele".
