Trading Places

Well all good things come to an end and, after a record-breaking 11-week run, Smashproof abdicate the number one crown as 'Brother' slips to second place.

Eminem trades places after a two-week pause in the runners-up place. 'We Made You' becomes Marshall Mathers' fifth trip to the summit here and augurs well for his forthcoming "Relapse" issue, due May 18.

He has the equivalent of a chart-topper every two years with more than a quarter of his 18 hit haul making the top here. It makes for a very good batting average.

Eninem's full number one list in order is: 2002: 'Without Me' (seven weeks) and 'Lose Yourself' (four weeks), 2004: 'Just Lose It' (five weeks), 2006: 'Smack That' with Akon (four weeks), 2009: 'We Made You' (one week thus far).

Going on averages 'We Made You' should reign for 4 weeks.

Mother's Day 2009 provided a definite sales spike and confirms the week's reputation as the second only to Christmas peak period.

Leading the Mum-centred field by more than doubling last week's unit scan is Irish boy-singer Ronan Keating's now more than apt "Songs For My Mother".

The set easily sold Gold-and-a-half in the week.

Mum was definitely the word for Paul Potts as well. His number one "Passione" rebounds to number two. And Scots country singer Isla Grant makes a 10-point gain to number three landing her first ever Top 10 album with "Special To Me".

And then there's Andre Rieu. He adds some further units to the over 250,000 he's already shifted here. It gives the Dutchman an eighth title to his albums haul here.

"You'll Never Walk Alone", another helped by Mother's Day takes top new entry honours at number. It's the violinist's best entry point and just a place shy of last December's number three "Waltzing Matilda" - his highest Albums charter here.

Three other albums are new on the NZ Chart this week.

Ben Harper, joined by the Relentless 7 (actually three guys originally from Texas - Jason Mozersky, Jordan Richardson and Ingalls) drops in for tenth time since 1996's number seven debut effort "Fight For Your Mind".

The first for Ben and the 7 is "White Lies For Dark Times" at number 11. Previously Ben's landed two penthouse dwellers here - 1997's "The Will To Live" and 2006's "Both Sides Of The Gun - both of which spent a single frame on top in their first week.

NZ Music Month is represented by the solo debut for Boh Runga following in the solo footsteps of younger sister Bic. Boh's "Right Here" lands at number 33.

The former Cantabrian is no stranger to the list however. Along with her former band Stellar* she's posted a tally of eight Top 40 singles in the late '90s and early '00s.

And the final new album is Hillsong United's "a_Cross//the_Earth: Tear Down The Walls" at number 36.

It's the ninth time Sydney's Hillsong Church has placed a worship album in the NZ list. The biggest thus far was their last "This Is Our God" which peaked at number nine.

There's a Hutt Valley Kiwi connection - Brian Houston who founded the Hillsong Church originally hails from Taita and from Naenae comes Brooke Fraser who appears musically under her Brooke Ligertwood married name.

The Singles chart has three newies led by Keri Hilson with Kanye West & Ne-Yo at number four with 'Knock You Down'. It's lifted from the 26 year-old's solo debut "In A Perfect World."

The original American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson drops hit number two from her current album.

'I Do Not Hook Up' arrives at number 31 joining the set's first cut 'My Life Sucks Without You' which drops to number 26 this time around.

'Behind These Hazel Eyes' remains Kelly's only Top 10 shot in New Zealand.

Last but by no means least is the arrival of newcomer Janelle Monae who hails from Kansas City Kansas. Fresh at #36 is 'Open Happiness'.

Janelle is helped by 34-year-old Thomas DeCarlo Calloway using his Cee-Lo alias. Cee-Lo was the vocal half of Gnarls Barkley whose "Crazy" was the 500th number one on the Official NZ Music Chart with a seven-week non-stop streak three years back.
