The return of the magnificent four

Irish supergroup U2 end a four-year plus sabbatical with "No Line On The Horizon", the follow-up to their last album of new material "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb".

It becomes both their 13th NZ number one album and their 13th to open in the penthouse. It gives the four Irishmen a 17th chart album here, moving more units than any other title in a single week in the 2009 year to date.

December 2006 was the last time Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr last graced the summit when compilation "18 Singles" led for four frames.

It makes U2 far and away the most capped albums act in the history of the Official New Zealand Music Chart. Their closet competitor is Pink Floyd with nine number ones.

U2's lead single from the album, ‘Get On Your Boots', made number 20 earlier in the year and was the group's 39th hit single. The title track ‘No Line On The Horizon' is gaining traction and may well give them a 40th.

Smashproof featuring Gin prove their staying power in the Singles survey as ‘Brotherhood' rules for a third time and is also certified Gold for the locals.

Other Kiwi chartings this week belong to Tongan-born Auckland-based Deceptikonz member Devolo who denies Snoop Dogg his 19th NZ chart appearance.

The Pussycat Dolls' ‘Bottle Pop' does feature the Doggfather on their "Doll Domination" number eight sophomore issue that charted at the end of '08.

Elsewhere it's Snoop you'll hear. Here, however, Devolo is the guest MC on the track that takes highest Singles new entry honours this week.

In the process it gives Devolo a follow up solo-named entry following on from his ‘Too Shy' Top 10er from last year.

As for the PCDs? It gives the group who play the Vector Arena on May a ninth hit in all here. They had a straight four number ones streak with their first charters here. And as for Snoop? Well he was a guest on one of those, ‘Buttons'.

DVD-wise recent expat tourist Geoff Sewell, the man behind Amici Forever gives his local label Ode its first ever number one on any of the RIANZ Official New Zealand Music Charts.

The DVD "Live In Concert" by Geoff and Incognito was recorded during the Wellington leg of their February tour.

Now it bests all comers and is the number one selling music DVD in the land. Not only that, it sells Gold in the same week Geoff's "Believe" solo album outing strikes a Platinum award.

Just behind at number two on the DVD rankings comes "To Sir With Love", the tribute concert to Sir Howard Morrison filmed in the Te Arawa-native's Rotorua hometown.

Two Kiwis fly with Albums entries as well. Sola Rosa land their fourth chart album this week. In a single stroke "Get It Together" not only ends Andrew Spraggon's 3½-year recording process but also returns him to the NZ Charts with a joint highest entry and peak point.

The number 16 ranking places it above 2001's number 21 "Solarised", 2003's number 33 "Haunted Out-Takes" and 2005's number 18 "Moves On".

In the 80s it was BlamBlamBlam, in the 90s the Muttonbirds and in the 00s solo, all linked by the name Don McGlashan. The Aucklander responsible for several movie soundtracks as well, including "No.2" and "Dean Spanley", lands his second solo hit album "Marvellous Year" at number 26.

His other previous solo charter "Warm Hand" made number 11 in May 2006. The highest placed McGlashan-included long-player outing has been the Muttonbirds 1992 year long charting number two peaking self-titled debut.

There are three other debuting albums this time around. Former Tourist and half of Eurythmics, Scots chanteuse Annie Lennox's first hits compile "The Annie Lennox Collection" gathers tracks from her trio of previous solo work along with the mandatory new recordings.

Seventeen years back "Diva" (number six) marked Annie's lone arrival, while 1995's "Medusa" (number five) shares highest place honours with the new album. Her body of work tallies 20 hit singles and nine hit albums.

Early February 2009 was the 50th anniversary of the death of 22-year-old Buddy Holly in a plane crash on an aircraft named American Pie. Don McLean lamented Buddy's loss with his 1972 number one hit named after the plane.

Five decades on Charles Hardin Holley and his former band the Crickets land their highest charting album here. "The Very Best Of Buddy Holly & the Crickets" opens at number 19 bettering 1991's "True Love Ways" and 1993's "Words Of Love".

Finally after last year's two hits ‘Shake It' (number nine) and ‘Kelsey' (number 25) the self-titled debut Metro Station set sneaks into the Albums list at number 39.

The Trace Cyrus co-led four-piece can definitely say "thank you" to the recently wrapped Edge Summer Jam 2009 which saw them live throughout the country for renewed interest in the release.

Two more singles join the new Top 40 behind the PCDs and Devolo.

He was Lil in 2001 when he introduced himself via "Bow Wow (That's My Name)" (number 17). The now just Bow Wow had the biggest hit of his 10 thus far two years back along with Chris Brown and now three-time collaborator Johnta Austin.

That was ‘Shortie Like Mine'. Twenty one year old Shad Moss had Johnta join him and T-Pain on ‘Outta My System' (number seven), also from 2007. Now just Bow and Johnta are here on ‘You Can Get It All' at number 25.

Kings Of Leon's ‘Only By The Night' ends its second top run slipping to number three after 29 straight Top 10 weeks. Not that it'll worry the soon-to-be visitors as ‘Revelry' gives them a third hit from the album fresh at number 27 and a fifth in all.
