OMFGG! / THE O.C. V2.0

One long drawn-out stare later, it's still no clearer as to why the slick Gossip Girl machine gave permission for the production of such obviously bland album artwork. A yellow bath-robe doesn't even ring a show-bell, yet alone seem worthy of cover art. The weak CD sleeve is only slightly offset by the savvy soundtrack title, OMFGG: Original Music Featured on Gossip Girl - No. 1.
Bright, kitschy photography aside... the team formerly behind the teen sensation of a guilty pleasure, The OC, are at it again. Introducing underground artists, one brightly polished indie-pop gem after the other, it's a wish-list mix CD following in the foot-steps of the previous 'OC soundtracks.
My major complaint towards OMFGG, is the omission of Lincoln Hawk's Everytime. Only legally available as a bonus track with the full purchase of the soundtrack on American iTunes, the physical version of the CD just feels incomplete without it. If Lincoln Hawk means nothing to you, think Rufus Humphrey's band. Jenny and Dan's, Dad's band. If this is still all a list of foreign names to you, a Gossip Girl marathon is immediately prescribed for your vegetative benefit.
The 'real' band behind Lincoln Hawk, Song And Wager, recorded Everytime exclusively for Gossip Girl but are the real-life talent behind Something Like That, which was also featured on the show. Despite it's lightweight simplicity, if you have a heart anything like mine with a weakness for epic love songs, Everytime burns a hole right through.
The SohoDolls Stripper, is the other glaring exclusion, not even included as a bonus track. As Blair Waldorf's burlesque strip theme, the song sums up the TV show in ways that the attempt of CD artwork had undoubtedly planned to capture.
Highlights of the soundtrack include the Summeresque Nadia Oh's Got Your Number, Oppenheimer's Breakfast In NYC and my personal favourite, Phantom Planet's Do The Panic. Also worth a mention is The Pierce's contribution of Three Wishes. Not a pick I would have chosen... but check out Boy In A Rock And Roll Band from their latest album Thirteen Tales Of Love And Revenge, featured in Season 2 of Gossip Girl.
